Stake 03 · Eco-Estate Seasonal Design Day

A homestead where every corner helps the next

One full day on your land to draw fields, hedgerows, flowers, compost and water into a single, living layout — inspired by satoyama and shaped for Hokkaido.

What the design day gives you

Imagine walking your land a few years from now: a hedge humming with small birds, a strip of clover and phacelia buzzing in July, leaves from the woodland edge turning into compost for the field. Nothing forced, everything in its place. The design day is where that picture gets drawn — on paper first, then step by step on the ground.

  • One clear picture

An illustrated layout showing how every part of your land connects.

  • A gentle rhythm

A year-round calendar so you always know what's next.

  • Life returning

Space for birds, pollinators and healthy soil to settle in.

Where many people begin

You have land — maybe newly bought, maybe inherited, maybe already half-planted — and a strong sense of what you'd like it to feel like. The trouble is deciding where everything goes. Should the hedge be on the north side or the west? Where will the compost be handy without being in the way? Does the pollinator strip need full sun?

Without a plan, it's easy to plant things in a hurry and spend years moving them. That's not a failing; it's what happens when you're making dozens of linked decisions one at a time. Seeing the whole place at once changes everything.

How we design with you

Satoyama landscapes worked because farmland and woodland supported each other. We apply that idea to properties of around 0.1 hectares and larger, at whatever stage they're at.

  1. Layer 1

    Woodland edge

Shelter, leaf litter and habitat along the boundary.

  2. Layer 2

    Hedgerows

Living windbreaks placed against the prevailing wind.

  3. Layer 3

    Pollinator strip

Sunny margins flowering from early summer into autumn.

  4. Layer 4

    Field-crop areas

The best-drained, warmest ground set aside for growing.

  5. Layer 5

    Compost corner

Close to the field and kitchen, sheltered from wind.

  6. Layer 6

    Rainwater collection

Tanks fed from roofs, with a simple plan for the winter freeze.

How the five hours unfold

  1. Morning

    Reading the land

We walk the boundary, note sun, wind, slope and where snow and melt water gather.

  2. Midday

    Talking it through

Over lunch, we hear what you hope for and how much time you have each week.

  3. Afternoon

    Sketching on site

We stake out key features together and draft the layout you'll receive, hand-drawn.

You'll be involved throughout. The most useful part is often simply standing in each spot and imagining it together before anything is planted.

Your session fee

Eco-Estate Seasonal Design Day

¥17,500

5 hours on site · properties of around 0.1 ha and larger

Travel within the Niigata area is included; further afield, Hokkaido included, we share an estimate first. Payment by bank transfer or on the day.

What's included

  • Five hours of on-site design together
  • An illustrated site layout
  • A year-round task calendar
  • A plant list for hedgerows and pollinator strips suited to Hokkaido
  • A 45-minute online follow-up within six weeks

A design that saves even one hedge from being moved already saves a good deal of effort. We draw planting and layout only: we do not value land, advise on buying it or forecast any return from it.

Why it works, and what to expect over time

Connected landscapes — hedges beside fields, flowering margins, a woodland edge — are widely recognised for supporting birds, beneficial insects and pollinators. Placing each layer according to sun, wind and water means the land does more of the work for you.

A gentle timeline

  • First weeks: the follow-up call to refine priorities.
  • Year one: key planting — hedges, strip and compost corner in place.
  • Years two to three: hedges fill out; flowers reseed; wildlife begins to visit.
  • Year five and on: a place with its own settled rhythm.

Your task calendar includes simple checkpoints, so progress is easy to notice and record.

Our commitment to you

  • A layout you're happy with

If something in the drawing doesn't sit right, we'll adjust it during your follow-up at no extra cost.

  • Weather flexibility

A day of heavy rain or snow simply moves to a better date.

  • Free consultation first

A no-obligation call to check the design day suits your property and stage.

Getting started

  1. 01

Send us your property's rough size and location — a few photos help too.

  2. 02

We'll arrange a short call to talk about your hopes and timing.

  3. 03

We set a design day once the snow has gone — ideally in late spring or early autumn.

Let's sketch the place you've been imagining

Whether your land is bare or busy, we'd be happy to hear about it. A note is all it takes to begin.
